the history
Bartholomew was born heir apparent, the first child of His Majesty Solomon the King and Her Majesty Rosemary the Queen. A year later Rosemary became pregnant again but, after a series of complications, died giving birth to Bartholomew's younger brother, His Royal Highness Jeremiah. The loss of his wife greatly affected Solomon and distanced him from his sons, particularly Jeremiah who looked quite similar to Rosemary, so Bartholomew took Jeremiah under his wing instead. When Bartholomew was three he was gifted a playmate by a family who had been the companion to kings for generations, the Amsel line. He grows up alongside Konstantin Arden Amsel and they become very close friends, spending every ounce of free time together that they can. Konstantin is three years older than Bartholomew but is not bothered by this fact whatsoever so Bartholomew grows up believing he is always good enough. He never becomes close to his father again.
On Bartholomew's 12th birthday the kingdom throws a celebration at a local park for him. Many a great deal of famous people are there, celebrities and other kings and queens and dozens of bodyguards. Many civilians have come out to the celebration, lured by free food and fun. Bartholomew's brother, barely 10 at this point, is assassinated at the party by a single shot to the head. Konstantin takes a bullet in the shoulder when they fling themselves in front of Bartholomew to save him from being shot as well. As Konstantin recovers Solomon detaches himself completely from his remaining son; so Bartholomew's only close companion is his playmate-turned-bodyguard. He becomes sullen and emotionally distant from the kingdom, holing himself up in his room with Konstantin and little else.
Shortly after Bartholomew's 13th birthday Solomon suffers a severe stroke and cedes the throne to Bartholomew to ensure that the power remains in their family. Due to the country's archaic laws this transfer of power is legally acceptable if not generally disapproved of by the citizens of Cape Ryprus. Bartholomew becomes a boy king and succeeds only through Konstantin's constant pep talks and support. They officially becomes Bartholomew's bodyguard and then the head of the unit of soldiers that work to protect Bartholomew as he becomes more prevalent and his presence far more public. Bartholomew runs the country surprisingly well and the people come to love him, calling him the boy king in reverent tones.
Of course, not everyone shared their affection for their young king.
Right before Bartholomew's 17th birthday there is another assassination attempt on his life. These mercenaries are far smarter than the multitudes that have come before them; they shoot Konstantin first, hitting them in the leg, thinking it will take them out of the equation and Bartholomew will be easier to get to. What they don't count on is Konstantin picking Bartholomew up and running with him into the castle for safety, collapsing only when they are certain that Bartholomew is in the hands of his other guards. They spend three months in the hospital undergoing surgery to correct the damage wrought to their femur and Bartholomew spends as much time as possible at their bedside.
Solomon recuperates after four and a half years spent in intensive care and physical therapy and returns to the kingdom. Bartholomew happily returns the throne to him; being 17 and already a retired king makes Bartholomew a busy boy. He works alongside his father and often sits in on meetings that his father either can't or won't attend. Konstantin still accompanies him everywhere he goes. Those countries and representatives that worked closely with him in his father's absence often ask for Mew's presence instead, citing his past experience with the details of their alliances. Bartholomew frequently flaunts to King Solomon that they ask for him simply because they like him better.

languages - Bartholomew speaks German, English, Spanish and French. He has a good ear for language and could no doubt pick up more if he put his mind to it, although German and English he learned very young and thus very easily. He can also easily read and write Latin, though it does not come as naturally to him to speak as the others do. He prefers to read in a book's native language and this was actually the reason he learned both Spanish and French, the first when he was 12, the second at 14. They have both since come in handy with diplomats.
home - Bartholomew lives in a small country named Cape Ryprus. It is situated on the coast of Germany and is mostly a sea-fairing country, specializing in imports and exports and the like. However the country is also rich in oil and some natural gems, specifically rubies (the ruby is considered the country's national gem, in fact). Cape Ryprus is not an incredibly rich country but they have stable finances. Their official language is German but 90% of the population speaks fluent English as a second language. Bartholomew himself lives in the crown jewel of Cape Ryprus, the Castle Edelstein, so named for the German word for a precious stone. It is on the coast as depicted in the picture to the right and about that size. Not substantially large but there are plenty of rooms for the (very) small royal family and their (far larger) staff. They are surrounded on three sides by rich woodlands, the fourth side by the sea. Bartholomew spends much of his time outside when the weather is tolerable, as the castle was built generations ago and does not keep the interior an even temperature all that often. His rooms are on the second floor in the Main Hall, next to his father's rooms. He has technically four rooms that are his own; a bed chamber, a bathroom, a guest room for only very particular guests (the rich, the famous, and the favored) and a spare room directly attached to his bedroom for whatever the monarch might desire. Bartholomew uses the last room for Konstantin. (Oops.) |
pets - Konstantin gave Bartholomew a male lutino peach-faced lovebird for his 16th birthday. Bartholomew named him Mordecai and harness trained him as quickly as he was able to so that Mordecai would be able to accompany him wherever he went. Oftentimes Mordecai will sit on his shoulder wearing his little orange harness and cheep quietly in his ear. Bartholomew brings him along to near on every meeting, regardless of what the other diplomats think.

the heart
personality - conscientious || devious || savvy || alluring
Bartholomew learned how to be a prince before he learned how to be a little boy. Many of the mannerisms he learned as a child have lingered into adulthood, namely his public behavior and his charming way with words. When dealing with strangers or mere acquaintances he speaks slowly and carefully, always choosing his words with caution. He never appears to be in a hurry, let alone in the way he talks. He is incredibly conscious of what he says due to always being in diplomatic situations. He is deviously clever, always manipulating people for his gain, always planting ideas and sowing secrets and alliances. He keeps all his cards close to his chest. He is charismatic and seductive although he never follows through on his flirtations. He is playing something of a Tony Stark game in which women and men alike lie about sleeping with him for the publicity and he doesn't have to do anything at all. Bartholomew never messes around with the newspapers or the paparazzi because he doesn't have the capacity to expend enough energy to correct all the lies.
He has a far softer side, a more humane side, but the public rarely sees it. When he's around close friends he will laugh carelessly and easily, tell jokes, speak his honest opinion on newspapers and the like. Because Bartholomew is always aware of what he's doing and saying he gets tired of being around people if he's there for too long. He tends to be introverted although he can obviously surpass this when duty calls for it. He has a soft spot for birds, particularly parrots, and likes to read when he has the opportunity. He doesn't very much enjoy being a prince apart from the obvious benefits such as the money. Bartholomew likes nice things and he's not embarrassed of it; he enjoys soft clothes and nice sheets and good food. He's independent and hates being protected or treated differently for his rank, although it's been so long since anyone has treated him normally that he's half-forgotten being a civilian.

the looks
Picture a Disney prince. Handsome, fair-skinned, blonde, dimpled. Now shorten them to the height of a small adolescent as Bartholomew tops out at about five feet three inches and make their hair rather disastrous than sexily gelled back. Give them a toothy smile and smoldering eyes. Give them an sharp temper and a sharper tongue and a general disinterest in women and/or princesses. Now you have Bartholomew, a boy king, all of 17 and already running away from the country who has called him Your Majesty for four years. He's very pale, not surprising given his Germanic ethnicity, and tans poorly. If he's left out in the sun for too long he tends to burn and peel in great ugly swatches of old skin. He wears sunscreen almost religiously due to this. He's got short fingered hands, blunt fingernails, thick knuckles. He has a boxer's hands rather than a diplomat's.
His hair is kept generally cut short (like in the picture below) but he doesn't care to style it himself so if he's not being presented somewhere he keeps it how it looks when he wakes up. His hair is the same darker blue color as the panda-esque markings in his feral form. His dad, who has what he calls 'mundane' black hair, has never liked his son's hair and has encouraged him since he was a toddler to dye it blonde. Bartholomew kind of just ignores him each time it's reinstated as a suggestion. His stubble grows in black as do his eyebrows, which are well-trimmed and neat above bright cyan eyes. His irises can be a tad distracting as they are a very vivid blue shade and stand out spectacularly against his pale skin.
His build is somewhere between a boxer and a ballerina. He is rather short and stout when seen from a distance, with fairly broad shoulders and what might be called child-bearing hips. But upon closer inspection his arms and legs are actually rather long, and it is simply his general shortness and the genuine short length of his torso that creates the boxer image. That and his rather large, calloused hands. He is more comfortable wielding a gun than he is a saber and quotes his large hands as the reason why. He dresses very well because he was (literally) trained to, always wearing neat suits that are cut to tailor to his body shape and flatter his build. He wears bright ties because he can. He often has his bird Mordecai with him and sometimes accessorizes to the bird's colors, with orange and yellow ties and cufflinks.
Bartholomew's face claim is Sebastian Schlueter, a German model.
