the history
Konstantin does never remember much of their childhood. They were taken from their parents when they six to be raised alongside Bartholomew, so the two of them could form a proper bond; so their parents were careful to never grow attached to their oldest child, so never speak too fondly to them or hug them for too long. Konstantin's father Emmerich was particularly strict about this, and he treated Konstantin with cold detachment, to ensure that Bartholomew's kindness would bond them all the more strongly. This worked very well; Konstantin has little affection for their family, because they scarcely know them.
They were moved to the castle when they were six, to become Bartholomew's playmate. Bartholomew is three years younger, so at first Konstantin was bothered, because the prince was a toddler and Konstantin was not used to playing with them (their father had rarely let them interact with Hildebrant, when he'd been born), but they came together surprisingly quick. The Amsel line had served the kings for generations, and these two were no different; they forged a friendship that would serve them both for years, and eventually grow into something more.
They were educated alongside Bartholomew and so they have a sizable education, although they have no official degrees. They're skilled with manipulation, manners, various cultures and languages; they serve Bartholomew in everything, and so they are something of a Swiss army knife. They have to be prepared for anything. They were trained rigorously with various guns and knives in order to better protect Bartholomew, and they have continued that training with various experts flown in from around the world. Cape Ryprus' military is a sight to behold, mostly due to Konstantin's insistence on all the soldiers continuing their training even without active duty.
Mostly Konstantin's life revolves about Bartholomew. When they were sixteen they were shot in the shoulder protecting Bartholomew at a party, and when they were twenty they were shot in the thigh. Once again, this was done in the line of duty, but Konstantin's relationship with Bartholomew has blurred the line between them; it is no longer a question of what they should do, but what they want to do. They would never let anything happen to Bartholomew, not if they could help it.

the home
languages - Konstantin grew up speaking German but their father insisted they learn English as well. They didn't understand as a child that they would be removed from their family and taken to the castle, and so they tolerated the language shift well. They were fluent in German and English by the time they were six, and understandable in French as well, although they struggled some with the unusual sounds. Over the years they've learned to understand a handful of other languages for eavesdropping purposes, although they are incapable of speaking or reading any of them.
home - Konstantin was born and raised in a small Germanic country called Cape Ryprus. They were removed from their childhood home when they were three and taken to the castle in order to bond to Bartholomew, and so they have lived in the prince's quarters ever since. Bartholomew's main rooms are on the second floor in the Main Hall, next to their father's the king. Bartholomew's main bedroom is the one that Konstantin is frequently in (much to his father's chagrin), but they have their own room as well that is directly attached to Bartholomew's. It's decorated in the same style as much of the castle and really rather too fanciful for Konstantin's tastes, but they're too placid to go ahead and ask to change it. Rather they deal with the large bed and the strange chest that perches at the foot of it and the enormous windows with their lace curtains. They have few personal items in the room, just a handful of things collected over the years, and what is most important to them they usually keep in Bartholomew's dresser or on his nightstand. |
pets - Although Konstantin has no pets of their own, Mordecai is like their son. They've helped Bartholomew with the bird since they first bought him, and they've grown very attached to him. That being said, Mordecai is primarily Bartholomew's, and if he's out he's on the prince's shoulder; but Konstantin keeps him company when he's separated from Bartholomew, and they feel as if they share a mutual affection for the young man.

the heart
personality - private || obedient || protective || selfless
Konstantin grew up with the knowledge that one day they would be taken from their home and placed in the castle to be the new prince's closest friend. This impacted them from a very young age; they understood when they were all of three that someone else's needs would always be placed above their own, and they learned from their father (who's own brother had been the king's playmate growing up) that this was a Good Thing. Konstantin never learned to be selfish, at least not when it came to the prince; Bartholomew will forever be more important than they are, and that is fine. Konstantin is, and always has been, perfectly content to be on the sideline. They are also very submissive to Bartholomew and do what they are told, although their friendship has relaxed over the years that Konstantin makes suggestions and opinions now aplenty. To outsiders however Konstantin no doubt looks like something akin to a slave; they're always trailing after Bartholomew, always standing at his side being quiet and helpful. In reality, their relationship is on far more equal footing.
Konstantin is incredibly protective of Bartholomew, almost to a possessive point, and is assertive about Bartholomew getting whatever makes him the happiest. Konstantin would sacrifice anything to make their prince laugh, although they show no such dedication to any other friends. Rather they spend almost the entirety of their day with Bartholomew and when they are apart Konstantin is usually doing other things for him; checking orders or perusing the castle for unsafe practices. They like keeping busy and like having a full day; they are naturally very active and more inclined to do something demanding than something easy. This is especially prevalent when they are allowed to pick board games, because they always go for the harder ones. They play their cards close to their chest and are rather private about things personal to them, such as the necklace they're always wearing. While they would do anything Bartholomew asked of them they are not half as obedient to other people in the castle, and they are especially passive aggressive with Bartholomew's dad, the current king.

the looks
Konstantin is handsome in a way that is foreign to the capital; they're very dark-skinned, which is unusual for Cape Ryprus, with alarming yellow eyes and smoky black eye whites. They hair is naturally an odd medium sterling color and the hue stands out sharply against their dark skin, no matter how they cut it. They have sharp cheekbones and an expressive browline and got a septum piercing when they were all of fifteen to complement the elegant shape of their nose, and they wear it daily. Bartholomew likes to buy them fanciful jewelry for it, and Konstantin tolerates it with great affection but they prefer the simple sterling half-loop that they got pierced with. They wear a necklace constantly and even shower with it on, but they tend to tuck the pendent under the collar of their shirt so they don't get bothered with any questions.
Currently Konstantin's hair is shaved on the sides and allowed to grow unfettered along the top, shaping a sort of messy mohawk. They rarely do anything for it, whether it be hair products or a new haircut, so it's faintly curled at the ends and very soft. They use Bartholomew's fancy products in the showers so they frequently are praised for it. They inherited their father's fine, thin hair, rather than the thicker hair of their mother, and they don't mind it overmuch but it can sometimes be startling against the shade of their skin. (People expect an afro when they touch it, and get something else entirely.) They were born with the same pale grey hair they have now, although it has lightened a bit over the years. Bartholomew is convinced their hair will be white as a newborn rabbit by the time they're fifty.
They're fairly tall and built rather thick, with long legs supple with muscle. They've never been chubby; their parents instilled in them a fondness for exercise that they never grew out of, especially with Bartholomew's life resting always on their shoulders. They have gun-callouses on their hands and half a dozen scars that they display with pride. They've been shot twice in their life, with both causing lingering damage, but they've recovered as much as they ever will from the injuries. There's a star shaped scar in their left shoulder from where one shot went clean through but far more catastrophic damage was done when they were shot in the thigh. The scar is much worse (due to the initial injury and the proceeding surgeries) and the wound left a permanent limp. Konstantin can still move around easily but their leg bothers them especially during the rainy season, and they have a tendency to stand with the majority of their weight pitched to their left leg to rest their right.

the facts
➣ although the proper way to address Bartholomew would be Your Royal Highness (as he is now a prince again), Konstantin still calls him Your Majesty. Mostly because Konstantin doesn't really like Mew's dad
➣ they never take off a coin necklace given to them by Bartholomew. The coin serves as the pendent. It's a coin from Bartholomew's father's reign, Solomon. It has a picture of his face on it and was minted the year 1989
➣ they're a surprisingly good cook and specialize in pastries
➣ they personally prefer bitter/plain foods rather than something sweet, but do like honey in or on almost everything
➣ in fact, the only way they'll eat french fries is if they have honey to dip the fries in
➣ Konstantin has been shot twice in their life, once in the left shoulder when they were 16 and once in the thigh of their right leg when they were 20, both obtained while protecting Bartholomew
➣ they have some lingering stiffness in their shoulder (usually during rain/wet season) but have a noticeable limp in their right leg still
➣ that limp is usually subtle but exasperated by excess exercise or certain types of weather, particularly when it's cold
➣ if they exercise too hard they are sometimes reduced to walking with a cane
